Honors College Curricula Explained

The Honors College curriculum includes two levels of study: Honors Foundations (Level 1) and Honors Explorations (Level 2), which includes the Honors College capstone experience. Combined, our curriculum satisfies most of SCSU ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.™s liberal education program (LEP) requirements for a bachelor ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.™s degree except for the Multilingual Communication requirement and the Quantitative Reasoning requirement appropriate to your major. Be sure to speak with your advisor about whether additional LEP classes are required for your major.  

Level 1: Honors Foundations (16 credits)

Usually completed during the student ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.™s 1st and 2nd year at SCSU

  • INQ 101 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Intellectual and Creative Inquiry (3 credits)
  • HON 150 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Introduction to Critical Inquiry (3 credits)
  • HON 271 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Scientific Investigation (4 credits)

Choose 6 credits from:  

  • HON 205 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Foundations of Academic Inquiry: Arts and Humanities (3 credits)  
  • HON 206 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Foundations of Academic Inquiry: Sciences (3 credits)
  • HON 207 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Foundations of Academic Inquiry: Leadership and the Professions (3 credits)  

Level 2: Honors Explorations (22 credits)  

Usually started during the student ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.™s 2nd year at SCSU  

  • HON 300 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Community and Service Engagement (3 credits)  
  • HON 350 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Capstone Exploration (3 credits)  
  • HON 401 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Professional Development (3 credits)  
  • HON 402 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Honors Leadership (1 credit)  

Choose 6 credits from:  

  • HON 210 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ The Idea of Self: The Ancient World (3 credits)  
  • HON 250 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ The City in Western Civilization (3 credits)  
  • HON 254 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Utopias and Dystopias (3 credits)  
  • HON 255 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Ambiguity and Uncertainty in the Arts & Sciences (3 credits)  
  • HON 290 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ The Language of Art (3 credits)  
  • HON 298 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Special Topics (3 credits)  
  • HON 305 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Explorations of Academic Inquiry: Arts and Humanities (3 credits)  
  • HON 306 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Explorations of Academic Inquiry: Sciences (3 credits)  
  • HON 307 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Explorations of Academic Inquiry: Leadership and the Professions (3 credits)  
  • HON 398 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Special Topics (3 credits)  
  • HON 498 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Special Topics (3 credits)  

New HON classes are being developed all the time, so be sure to check back for new HON electives to choose from to meet the 6-credit requirement for this category.

  • Thesis Research

  • Community Service
    • HON 460 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Community Engaged Research I (3 credits)
    • HON 461 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ Community Engaged Research II (3 credits)
  • Study Abroad
    • HON 451 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ International Study Foundations (1 credit)
    • Elective course taken while abroad (3 credits)
    • HON 452 ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú †.“ After Abroad: Research and Creative Activity (2 credits)
