The Master of Arts degree in History allows students to expand their knowledge of advanced historical coursework from the ancient to the modern world. The program is comprised of courses in U.S., European, and Non-Western History. Certified teachers will strengthen content knowledge and prepare to pursue secondary teaching positions. Students will also strengthen the foundational knowledge necessary to pursue university teaching positions or Ph.D.-level research. Students in the History, M.A. program may be eligible for teaching or research-based Graduate Assistantship positions. Our graduate program is ideal for history professionals and highly motivated individuals who wish to advance their careers in history education. This program allows secondary education teachers to broaden their knowledge base for their classrooms. Students must choose a major and minor field of history and complete a six-credit thesis.

Topics Covered

  • Courses in U.S. History focus on the American Revolution, Civil War, colonial period, women in history, American Indian history, multiculturalism, and radicalism
  • Courses in European History focus on the World War I era, Stalin in power, German foreign policy, medieval Europe, modern Europe, and the Russian Revolution
  • Courses in Non-Western History focus on the Vietnam War, Southeast Asia, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and trade in society in West Africa.
  • Courses also cover Islam and the Muslim world, as well as China under communism and China since Western impact.

Careers

The History, M.A. program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to advance their careers in teaching, research, and writing or to pursue doctoral studies in history. Graduates are prepared for roles in secondary and university teaching, Ph.D.-level research, and the exploration of family history, fostering a deeper understanding of the past and its relevance to the present.
